What’s your favorite black-owned brand on BLK + GRN?
I peruse BLK + GRN’s site all the time, the selection of Black artisans are off the charts so they are all my fav!
Why do you think it is important to Buy Black?
Since 1999, Black female entrepreneurship has quadrupled and I want to see that continue to grow. Buying Black is a new concept just like Black people wearing sunscreen so it’s important to uplift and support our community.
What’s your self-care routine?
I take pride in my skin; it is my favorite asset. My weekly routine is to drink plenty of water, eat avocado and drink daily smoothies. I’ve eliminated fried food, fast food and anything that may cause a pimple, LOL. I also practice yoga regularly as well as Soul-Cycle.
What's on your vanity and what’s in your purse?
Candles, flowers, books and an inspirational quote are currently on my vanity. And in my purse: a wallet with no cash (only credit cards), lip balm, usually some type of healthy snack, BlackGirlSunscreen, phone charger.
Anything else coming soon?
Currently, we produce our signature line of sunscreen, BlackGirlSunscreen. BGS is a weightless, ultra-sheer, fragrance free, melanin reinforcing SPF 30 sunscreen moisturizer using natural ingredients including carrot seed oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, avocado and shea butter. We also have several new products in development that we are really excited about bringing to market in the future!
Why do you do what you do?
Hey! It’s Shontay Lundy, Owner and Creator of BlackGirlSunscreen. It is a passion of mine to create awareness and education around protecting our melanin.
What was your "Aha Moment" and when did your vision start to manifest?
As an avid hiker, beachgoer, and outdoor yoga enthusiast, I wanted to enjoy these pursuits while protecting my skin. BlackGirlSunscreen was born from a need for a product that offered broad-spectrum sun protection and blended beautifully with dark skin tones—instead of leaving a white residue.
My “aha” moment came from a feeling of being underwhelmed by the lack of products on the market for people of color. I knew there had to be something that could work and I knew that if I could figure out how to make it happen, it’d be a game changer. With this motivation, I started looking for a solution and discovered that there were natural ingredients that could boost melanin production, offer proper UV protection, and be fully absorbed by our skin. BlackGirlSunscreen was developed by myself and became FDA-approved last year.
How is your brand green? Why was this important to you?
BGS proudly provides broad spectrum protection using alternative ingredients that are safe for people and the environment by being Paraben-free and Oxybenzone-free.
Parabens are the most widely used preservatives in cosmetics and personal care products such as soap, moisturizers, shaving cream and underarm deodorant that are used to extend shelf life.
Oxybenzone is an active ingredient commonly used in making sunscreens because it provides broad spectrum ultra-violet coverage. However, it is a toxic chemical that can cause hormonal disruption, reproductive issues and allergic skin reactions. Further, Oxybenzone has been directly linked to the environmental contamination in the form of coral bleaching and die-offs which contribute to the declining health of coral reefs.
Today we live in a health-conscious society and we want BlackGirlSunscreen to exemplify that in every way.
What need do you currently see being unmet that you address?
BlackGirlSunscreen is a new concept; black people don’t normally wear sunscreen. Our approach for BGS is to use natural ingredients that moisturize the skin without leaving a white residue or as we know it being ashy. BGS should be used as an everyday facial moisturizer as it addresses protection against UVA/UVB rays, damage to the skin and premature aging. Individuals with lupus and/or chronic acne need to be especially conscious of the impacts of sun damage to the skin. BlackGirlSunscreen wants you to be smart, come out from the shade and protect your skin.
