Eliminating Toxicity In Underarm Hygiene

By: Trinity Slade

Remaining clean and fresh is important to maintaining proper hygiene. However, it is vital to ensure that the products we use are not harming our bodies in the process. One area we tend to most to maintain cleanliness is the underarm. We use products such as deodorant, wipes, and powder to stay fresh all day, but at what cost?

Most antiperspirant deodorants contain aluminum compounds which are used to plug pores to prevent sweating, thus trapping toxins within the body. Aluminum deodorant usage has been shown to be linked to diseases such as Alzheimer's and breast cancer in countless studies (Darbre, 2005). Although aluminum has not yet been confirmed by the American Cancer Society as a carcinogen, these connections are incredibly notable and should be taken seriously. Sweating is natural and should not be prevented. Odor prevention, on the other hand, is reasonable and can be done safely.

When looking for underarm hygiene products, it is important to look for more than just an “aluminum-free” label. Although these products may not contain this one potentially dangerous element, there may be a plethora of other questionable, unnatural, and harmful ingredients. Stick to products that are natural and non-synthetic. As with any product you purchase (and we do mean any product) look thoroughly through the ingredient list. If it doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. Here at BLK + GRN, we have some recommendations for how to stay away from toxicity in your underarm hygiene routine.

Begin by using the Deep Detox Underarm Mask by Saige + Ivy to assist in the elimination of toxins from the underarm region. This mask is made thoughtfully with Bentonite clay which has been known for thousands of years for its ability to draw out dirt and debris, excess oils, and dead skin. It also promotes blood flow and tightens the skin. The detox mask also contains Rhassoul clay which heals the skin while maintaining natural oils. A detox is necessary when transitioning to natural deodorant so the toxins that have built up throughout the years may be released. This will cause the natural deodorants to be much more effective. The detox should last anywhere from one to three weeks. After detoxing the armpits, it’s time to move on to deodorant.

Piper Wai’s Activated Charcoal Deodorant is an invisible, absorbent, pH-balanced creme made to shield your underarms and prevent odor naturally. Fully botanical-based, this product was made especially with the consideration of those with sensitive skin, so rest assured that this formula is non-irritant.

As Black women, we must pay close attention to the products we use on our bodies. We are at a higher risk for several diseases and types of cancers including, but not limited to breast cancer (Palmer, Wise, Horton, 2003). With this, ensuring to keep toxic material away from the underarm, which is in close proximity to the breast region, is mandatory for our good health.

Revolutionize even the small steps in your hygiene routine. Even if it seems overwhelming at times, BLK + GRN is here to guide you along the way, step by step. Dedicate the time to do better for yourself. You will notice changes in your body’s natural response. In this particular case, you may notice less natural underarm odor due to the detox from harsh and toxic ingredients. Continue to upkeep this routine and be patient as your body adjusts to these positive changes. Aluminum be gone! We’re all natural around here!
