Candera of Bask & Bloom
This week, we're talking to Candera 'Candy' Thompson, whose personal wellness journey inspired her to study ayurvedic wellness methods, and eventually gave birth to her skin and haircare line, Bask & Bloom Essentials.
BLK+GRN: Why do you do what you do? CANDY: I am a wife, mother of 3 and an MBA graduate. Starting this brand allowed me to increase my self-confidence and self-acceptance. I’m able to show other women how to do the same while teaching them how to embrace and enhance their natural beauty through non-toxic hair and skin care. We have come a long way in diminishing the European standards of beauty, including the need for well-known products that haven’t been the best for our overall health. I’m happy to be apart of a more healthy lifestyle that’s also breaking barriers.

BLKGRN: What was your "Aha Moment" and when did your vision start to manifest? CANDY: I was sitting at my dinner table drinking some chamomile tea to help me sleep better while on Google for more herbal tea ideas to help. I came across a blog post that also discussed using herbal teas to help with breakage and shedding which was another issue I was having. I was intrigued and kept researching, that’s when I came across ayurvedic herbs and decided to create a hair oil for myself. I found a supplier who also offered classes on how to infuse the herbs in varies types of oils and their benefits. My first product, Stimulating Herbal Oil was created 3 months after taking those classes. I decided to I wanted to have my own brand creating products with the same concept for a full line. BLK+GRN: How is your brand green? Why was this important to you? CANDY: We eliminate harmful ingredients such as pthalates, parabens, petrolatum, formaldehyde, synthetic fragrances, and mineral oil. We prefer to see our customers thrive when using our products on their hair and skin without increasing the risk of having side effects or complications later on. BLK+GRN: Why do you think it is important to Buy Black? CANDY: Recycling our dollars gives us the opportunity to create generational wealth and more power to own establishments, be able to invest and get funding from our own people. We can buy and build communities effectively for generations to come.
