From Marketplace to Movement: The Evolution of BLK + GRN

Over the past few months, I’ve been paying close attention to the conversations happening around consumer power, economic boycotts, and where we choose to spend our money. One piece of advice keeps coming up again and again: buy directly from the brands.

The thinking behind this is simple. When you buy directly from a brand, more of your dollars go to the people actually creating the product. There are fewer middlemen, fewer fees, and more direct support for the founders and artisans doing the work.

In many ways, this mindset challenges the traditional role of marketplaces. Marketplaces have historically served two main purposes: discovery and distribution. They help customers find brands and they process the transaction. But in this current moment—where people are being more intentional about their spending—the emphasis is shifting. Discovery still matters deeply, but many customers want their dollars to flow directly to the brand once they’ve found it.

At BLK + GRN, we’ve always believed that economic empowerment for Black women founders matters. Our platform has introduced thousands of customers to incredible Black women-owned personal care brands making high-quality, non-toxic products. That discovery work remains essential.

What is changing is the purchasing process.

Moving forward, customers will no longer purchase products directly through BLK + GRN. Instead, when you find a product you love, you will be able to purchase it directly from the brand. BLK + GRN will continue to do what we do best: find, vet, and curate brands that meet our non-toxic standards. But the transaction will happen directly between you and the artisan.

This shift also creates a more sustainable model. Traditionally, products had to be shipped from the brand to the BLK + GRN warehouse and then shipped again to the customer. That extra layer of shipping created additional costs, packaging waste, and logistical complexity. By allowing customers to purchase directly from the brands, we eliminate unnecessary shipping and reduce the environmental footprint of the process.

It’s a simpler system that benefits everyone: the customer, the brand, and the planet.

This moment is also part of a larger conversation about intentional consumption. Living non-toxic is not just about reading ingredient labels. It’s also about being thoughtful about how and where we spend our money. Our purchasing decisions reflect our values, and building a healthy relationship with money means being mindful about what we support and why.

For me personally, this has become an important lesson in how I’m raising my sons. I spend a lot of time thinking about how to help them develop a positive relationship with money. I want them to understand that money is a tool, not something to fear or misuse. I want them to see the value in investing, in building assets, and in creating systems where money can work for them rather than trading their time for it forever.

Intentional spending is part of that lesson. Being thoughtful about where our money goes helps us build sustainable relationships with money and with the businesses we support.

Because of this shift, you’ll also see BLK + GRN putting even more attention on our blog, social media, and podcast. Removing toxicity from personal care products is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to living a toxic-free life.

Toxicity can show up in the food we eat, the media we consume, the thoughts we hold onto, and even the relationships we maintain.

Living non-toxic is not just about what you put on your skin. It’s about what you allow into your body, your mind, and your spirit.

Our goal is to continue helping women make informed choices about all aspects of their lives—from the products they use to the ideas they consume.

BLK + GRN will remain a place of discovery, learning, and community. We will continue introducing you to incredible Black women-owned brands creating non-toxic products you can trust. The difference is that when you decide to purchase, you’ll be supporting those founders directly.

The mission hasn’t changed. If anything, this shift brings us closer to it: helping women access the tools, resources, and products they need to live healthier, happier lives—while ensuring that the entrepreneurs creating those products can thrive.
