Plant-Based and Low on Energy? You Might Be Missing These Nutrients

There is a particular kind of afternoon fatigue that feels confusing. Breakfast was solid, lunch was balanced, you’ve had enough water, and yet by 2 or 3 p.m., concentration starts to slip and everything feels harder than it should. For someone who eats a thoughtfully planned plant-based diet, that can be especially frustrating. After all, isn’t the whole point of eating this way to feel good?
Plant-based eating can absolutely be a nutrient-rich, health-supportive way to eat. But “plant-based” does not automatically mean nutritionally complete, just as eating animal products does not guarantee that every nutrient need is being met. Some nutrients are simply harder to obtain from plants, or are present in forms the body absorbs less efficiently.
That is not a reason to abandon a plant-based lifestyle. It is a reason to know where the potential gaps are. For Black women balancing careers, families, community, workouts, and everything else life brings, understanding those gaps is another form of self-advocacy. The goal is not to eat differently. It is to eat intentionally.
Why Plant-Based Eating Can Leave Gaps
Plants bring a lot to the table: fiber, potassium, folate, vitamin C, antioxidants, and a huge range of beneficial plant compounds.
Beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables can form the foundation of a nutritious diet. At the same time, some nutrients are concentrated in animal foods or are more readily absorbed from animal-derived sources. Vitamin B12 is the clearest example. Plants do not naturally contain B12 unless they have been fortified, which is why people following vegan diets need a reliable source from fortified foods or supplements.
Iron is another nutrient worth paying attention to. Plant foods provide non-heme iron, which the body does not absorb as efficiently as the heme iron found in meat and seafood. In fact, people following vegetarian diets may need nearly twice as much dietary iron because of this difference in absorption.
None of this is a flaw in plant-based eating. Think of it the same way you would think about reading the ingredient label on a skincare product: knowing what is (and isn't), there allows you to make a more informed choice.
The Nutrients Most Likely Behind the Fatigue
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 has an important role in red blood cell formation and normal nervous system function, and it is involved in cellular metabolism. The challenge is that naturally occurring B12 is found primarily in animal foods. Plant foods contain B12 only when it has been added through fortification.
For someone eating vegan or mostly vegan, this makes B12 less of a “maybe I should get more” nutrient and more of a “where exactly am I getting this” nutrient.
Fortified nutritional yeast, some plant milks, breakfast cereals, and meat alternatives can contribute B12, but the amount varies considerably by product, so be sure to check the Nutrition Facts panel rather than assume a food contains enough.

Iron
Iron is essential for making hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen throughout the body. When iron intake or iron stores are inadequate, fatigue can be one of the symptoms.
Plant-based eaters have plenty of options: legumes, soy products, leafy greens, seeds, nuts, whole grains, dark chocolate and even fortified cereals can all contribute meaningful amounts of iron.
The trick is pairing those foods strategically. Vitamin C improves the absorption of non-heme iron, so adding bell peppers to a lentil bowl, berries to oatmeal, or citrus to a bean-based meal is a simple nutritional upgrade.
There is no need to obsess over individual meals. The bigger picture is consistently including iron-rich foods and pairing them with vitamin C throughout the week.
Creatine
Creatine tends to get filed under “sports supplements,” but its role in the body is broader than exercise performance. Creatine is part of the phosphocreatine system, which helps rapidly regenerate ATP, the body's primary cellular energy currency.
Because creatine is found predominantly in meat and fish, people who eat little or no animal food generally have lower creatine stores. Research specifically examining vegetarians suggests that creatine supplementation can be beneficial, as it may increase muscle creatine levels and support measures such as lean tissue and strength.

Omega-3s

The body can convert ALA into EPA and DHA, but the conversion is limited. Algae-derived supplements provide a direct plant-based source of DHA and, depending on the product, EPA as well.
Omega-3 deficiency is rare in the United States, so this is not necessarily a reason to assume that fatigue is caused by inadequate omega-3 intake. Instead, it is one more area where a plant-based eater can make an intentional choice based on their overall diet and health goals.
How to Tell What You're Actually Missing
Fatigue is one of the least specific symptoms in nutrition. Poor sleep, chronic stress, dehydration, inadequate calorie intake, heavy training, illness, and a dozen other factors can leave someone exhausted.
That is why guessing is not particularly useful. If fatigue is persistent or unusual, a conversation with a healthcare professional and appropriate bloodwork can provide much more useful information than adding five supplements to the cabinet.
Depending on the situation, a clinician may consider markers related to iron status, B12, blood counts, thyroid function, or other potential causes. The goal is not to assume something is wrong with the diet; it is to get actual information about what the body needs.

Filling the Gaps, the Clean Way
Filling nutrient gaps with a food-first approach is a great way to meet your needs. Fortified plant milks and cereals can provide B12, legumes and seeds can contribute iron, and pairing plant-based iron sources with vitamin C can improve absorption. Additionally, flax, chia, walnuts, and algae-based omega-3 products can all have a place in a well-planned plant-based diet.
Supplements can fill specific gaps when food alone isn't practical or sufficient. But the same label-reading standards used for food and personal-care products should apply here, too. Look for a clearly identified active ingredient, appropriate dosing, and a formulation that doesn't rely on a mystery blend or a dozen unnecessary additions.
