Who We Are

Black Sustainability, Inc. (BSI) is the world's largest network of sustainability practitioners of African descent. Our mission is to mobilize sustainability practitioners of Afrikan descent to (re)build sustainable communities and economies that restore balance to our planet.

Our vision is a global Black diaspora that is land-rooted, economically self-sufficient, and living in the right relationship with the earth, drawing on traditional ecological knowledge as much as modern innovation. What drives us is passion: for land, for culture, for community, and for the belief that sustainability is not a trend, it's a birthright we're reclaiming.

With over 2,400 members spanning North America, South America, Africa, Europe, and Australia, BSI connects practitioners, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts who are building sustainable solutions from the ground up.

What We Do

BSI's work spans learning, workforce development, and land stewardship:

Learning Journeys: Retreats and wellness and sustainability service-learning experiences that immerse participants in hands-on, culturally rooted education, from farm field days to international learning trips.

Black Sustainability eInstitute: Our virtual education platform, offering accessible online courses and certifications for members wherever they are.

Workforce Development: Training in green trades, including solar, green building, and agriculture, equipping our community with real skills for the growing green economy.

Food Sovereignty: Programs rooted in seed saving, conservation, and land activation, all grounded in traditional ecological knowledge passed down through generations.

Why Wholistic Health Is Important

Sustainability doesn't stop at the land, it extends to the body. We believe our community cannot build sustainable futures without also protecting their health in the present. That means clean air, clean water, clean food, and clean products. Wholistic health is the foundation that allows our members to show up fully for the land, for their families, and for each other. You cannot pour into a community and planet from a depleted, toxin-burdened body, so we treat personal wellness as inseparable from environmental stewardship.

Why This Partnership Is Important

This partnership is a natural extension of both of our missions. BSI trains and mobilizes people to build sustainable communities; BLK + GRN gives them access to the safe, non-toxic products that sustain their bodies along the way. Together, we're closing a gap our community has long felt: knowing what's healthy and actually having access to it.

Through this collaboration, our members can shop a curated collection on BLK + GRN's platform, and we can bring select BLK + GRN products directly to our community when we table at events, pairing education with practical, immediate access to healthier alternatives.

Why We Use and Reference Black and Green

Our language, Love Black, Live Green and All Things Black and Green, isn't just branding. It's how we describe the intersection where our identity and our mission meet: Black culture and green living, held together.

Our team is predominantly Black women across the African diaspora, and we know our health has to come first. From Rebundle to natural deodorant, nail polish, and beauty products, we live the alternatives we advocate for. When we table at events, we don't just talk about healthier, zero-waste living, we hand people the tools to do it: zero-waste swag and, now, clean Black-owned beauty products.

That's exactly why this partnership with BLK + GRN feels aligned rather than added on. Since 2017, BLK + GRN has built a curated, non-toxic marketplace of over 100 Black artisan brands, founded by Dr. Kristian J. Edwards after research showed Black women are disproportionately exposed to harmful chemicals in the products marketed to them. Their mission rests on the same three pillars ours does: safety, economic empowerment, and community trust. BLK + GRN calls itself "more than a marketplace, a movement," and that's language we recognize, because we're building a movement too.

Putting our two missions together is a dream realized, an investment in our community's health, our economic power, and our shared future.
